When I start Age of Empires: the Conquerors I get the following message:-

"Instruction at 0x0040d776 referenced memory at 0x00419fe0. The memory could not be written."

I have no idea what this means.

So far I have reinstalled the game and have restored to a point where the game worked. When I did this it did work once but the next time the problem started again. I have search for a solution, most suggest restoring which I have done or problems are listed under different 0x00.............. numbers or different OS.

I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit OS.

Do you still see the problem after restarting the computer?

    Thanks for further assistance.

I managed to get on to the Dell website and purchased their Driver Support App. It found 5 drivers missing and 25 that needed updating. It took some time to complete, rebooted and tested. Unfortunately the problem is still there.

I think I have followed the instructions on gerryscomputertips and hopefully the link is below.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. To access your System Information file select the keyboard shortcut Win+R, type msinfo32 and press the ENTERkey. Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload the file to your OneDrive, share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone fresh copies of your System and Application logs (two files) from your Event Viewer to your One Drive and post a link here. You can remove the earlier copies of the logs from your OneDrive.

To access the System log select the keyboard shortcut Win+R, type eventvwr.msc and press the ENTER key. From the list in the left side of the window select Windows Logs and System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not place the cursor in the list of reports before selecting Action from the menu. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

For help with OneDrive see paragraph 9.3:

I'm not having any success at the moment.

    So far I have:

    1. Gone into Safe Mode but the error still continues.
    2. I have restored system first to a recent point and there was no change and then did another to a much earlier point. Again no change.
    3. With regard to the Display Drivers, first I looked for updates via Microsoft and Control Panel. As usual this reported that both Intel HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA Force GT 750DM were up-to-date. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling but I don't think I did this right.
    4. I am trying to get on to the Dell website to check there for display drivers. There seems to be a problem with their site at the moment but will try this again.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

This issue may occur due to conflict between third party applications or due to memory issues. Let’s try few steps to resolve this issue.

Method 1: I would suggest you to run the Memory Diagnostic Tool and check if it helps.

    a) Press Windows key and type "memory".

    b) Click "Settings" and then click the result "Diagnose your computer's memory problems".

    c) Select the recommended option to run the tool.

Method 2: If the issue persists, I would suggest you to boot the computer to Safe Mode and check if the issue persists or not. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode, you may set the computer in a clean boot and check if it helps.

Step 1: Refer to the link to boot the computer into safe mode and check for the error message:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

If the issue does not occur in safe mode you may try step 2:

Step 2: Refer to the link to set the computer in a clean boot state and check if any other application or software is causing this issue.

Setting the system in a clean boot state will help to identify if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting steps, refer to the section "How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot" in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.

**Method 3:**If the issue persists, I would suggest you to download and install latest display driver from the computer manufacturer website and check if it helps.

Check if display driver for Windows 8.1 is available in the manufacturer website or not. If not, I would suggest you to install the display driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

To install the display driver in compatibility mode, I would suggest you to follow these steps.

    a. Download the latest display driver for Windows 8 from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.

    b. Right-click on the setup file of the driver and select “Properties”.

    c. Select “Compatibility” Tab.

    d. Place a check mark next to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select Windows 8 from the drop down list.

    e. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with updated status of the issue to assist you further.
