Window RT Printer Connection Lost with Update

My Surface RT has been successfully printing to my Lexmark E260d monochrome laser printer since I purchased it.  With the latest Windows update, I've lost the connection and am not able to connect to it.  I get the same error as when I try to connect to my older Canon Inkjet printer, which I know is not supported on RT.  I get an 0x00000490 error.  So far I've updated the firmware on the Lexmark printer with same results.  I'm using the control panel to add the printer.  Both printers show up in the list of printers to add, but I get an error trying to connect.  The Lexmark site still lists compatibility with RT.   Any suggestions before I try another printer.  Other computers on my wireless network running Windows 10 have no issues connecting with either printer.

    Hankranwar,

Thanks for you continued assistance.  I saved the drive to the desktop.  When I right click on the .exe file there is no compatibility tab.   RT shows me four tabs:  General, Digital Signatures, Security and Details.  I read the information in your link regarding compatibility.  It does not seem to apply to my situation.  My problem is not due to moving to a newer version of windows, it started when RT installed normal updates.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    • Select Windows 7 (or any other compatible OS) in the list of Operating systems.
    • Click OK.

Thanks for your response.  I'll try to answer your questions.

The error message I get is:  "Windows cannot connect to the printer. "  and under details it says "Operation failed with error 0x00000490."

I do have the related printer disks. (But installer will not run on RT).

Method 1 - Trouble shooter did not fix problems

Method 2 - Cannot do this.  If you are familiar with RT, you cannot install windows programs (or print drivers), so no programs are listed to uninstall.  Likewise, when I try to download Windows 8.1 driver from Lexmark's website, I get the error "This app can't run on your PC"

    Hi Tom,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I can imagine the inconvenience you are experiencing and will certainly help you in the right direction to fix the issue. However, I would appreciate if you could answer a few questions to narrow down the issue in order to provide you with better assistance.

    1. What is the exact error message that you get regarding the printer?
    2. Do you have the related printer driver discs to install the printer?

The issue may arise if the full feature version of the driver package of the printer model is either not installed properly or has got corrupted.

In order to diagnose and fix the issue, I would suggest try the following methods and check if the issue persists.

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to refer to the step-by-step suggestions provide in the following article to ensure if the required hardware, power and connection are in operation. Also, run the printing troubleshooter provided within the steps.

    ***Fix printer problems***

If the issue still exists, try the next method.

    Method 2:

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest full feature printer drivers and check if the issue persists.

Step 1: Uninstall the printer drivers installed in the system

    • Press Windows key + X, click Programs and Features.
    • Locate and select the Canon printer drivers in the list of programs.
    • Click Uninstall and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • Reboot your system.

Step 2: Reinstall the printer drivers

Reinstall the latest drivers from the following link compatible with Windows 8.1 from Lexmark's website.

Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.
