    Hi,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community.

If I understand you correctly you are unable to boot the computer as you could not login to the OS. Correct me if I am wrong.

Normally, if you are unable to boot the Windows 8.1 to its Start Screen, the Automatic Repair will check for the errors which is preventing Windows from booting up and will fix it. If this does not happen, then when you may need to run the Automatic Repair by booting the computer to Windows 8.1 installation/recovery disc.

If you do not have Windows 8.1 installation DVD, you may have to create one, boot the computer from it and then perform an Automatic Repair. To create installation media, you may refer to the article given below:

Create installation media for Windows 8.1

After creating the disc, boot the computer from the disc and then try the following method to perform an Automatic Repair.

    1. Contact the computer manufacturer to know on how to change the boot order of the computer. You will have to change the boot device to CD/DVD drive and then boot from the Windows 8.1 installation disk.
    2. In the “Windows Setup” dialog box that appears, set the Time and currency format, Keyboard or input method and the language to install and then click “Next”.
    3. Click on “Repair your computer” from the lower left corner.
    4. From the “Choose an option screen”, click on “Troubleshoot”.
    5. Click “Advanced Options” in the “Troubleshoot” screen.
    6. In the “Advanced Options” screen, click “Automatic Repair”.
    7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Automatic Repair.

If automatic repair doesn’t help to repair the startup files, you may try to repair them using these commands through Command Prompt under Advance Options.

    Refer to the steps:

    a) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVDor System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

    b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

    c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

    d) Select Troubleshoot from Choose an optionscreen.

    e) Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.

    f) Click on command Prompt.

    g) Type these following commands and hit enter after each line of command:

    Bootrec /fixmbr

    Bootrec /fixboot

    Bootrec /scanos

    Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Hope this would help. If issue still persists post back with current status of your computer and result of proposed suggestion, we will be happy to assist you.

    Regards,
