Gidday all,

Rig = AMD Athlon II x4 620 2.6ghz, 2gb Ram, Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit SP 1, on Asus M4A78

mod to bios-

sys config: ide to ahci (to improve tfr rate, NCQ; using sata, not ide, not raid)

  reboot to win 7

  blue screen

  revert to ide

  reboot

www for solution - mod registry using:

    KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci

chg DWORD value from 3 to 0

  reboot to Win 7 ok

  improve data exchanges

ran win update

installed optional AMD - Other hardware, Storage Controller - AMD SATA Controller,

  released March, 2013

  update stated "successful"

  reboot as required by update

Device Driver error 31 on Portable Devices

![](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/4f4f1e93-9627-4740-ba58-d188a33702cb?platform=QnA) WPD FileSystem Volume Driver (two)

  :-(

  checked bios, no change

  reboot

  bios - revert to ide

  restart

  no change, error 31 remains

  Rolled back AMD update

  error 31 remains

  hands thrown in air

NB. earlier this year experience same Device Driver error 31 on Portable Devices on Portable Devices for the WPD FileSystem Volume Driver. Research at time found no solution. However, believe a win update applied since then 'fixed' the error. The error was not apparent immediately prior to the AMD update.

Appreciate help please.

    It has worsened !!!! YEU%R&#EHUEDFJ%*^(T%^$  ☹

After having attempted winupdate, and over 800mb of fixes, patches, etc. Later the pc has really **** itself now.

Brief blue screen – can’t see what it is

    No boot

Attempted  many repairs to no avail

Tried sys recovery tools, nothing doing

    Error 0x0 many

No valid restore point, which I know there are several, from a few initial minor program updates

    Startup Repair Diags log/Report states:

Root Cause found – boot status indicates that the os booted successfully. ??????

    Also

Several disk, hive, and other tests run, all completed successfully, all code 0x0

    Also

A patch is preventing the system from starting – der !

    What next? I’m dum-founded :-(

    Hi Arun BJ,

thanks for your reply. Am very familiar with each of the steps you've suggested, I've attempted each of them repeatedly, still to no avail.

As for restore to previous driver, well we've gone beyond that point several times, where now the 'previous' version is the one that is not working. :-)

Not sure what the next step would be, not aware of anything, nor where to turn. Thanks for trying to help.

    regs,

    Chooglin'

    Happy New Year
