Setting up performance alerts in performance monitor

I am currently using Windows Server 2008 R2 (this was not listed in the pull downs for assigning this to groups - sorry if I posted to the wrong place).  I am trying to manually setup a user defined data collector set.  I clicked the create manually radio button and next.  I clicked performance counter alert and next.  From the create new data collector set I clicked the add button.  I opened the .Net CLR Data category in counters and clicked on SqlClient: Peak # pooled connections, then I clicked the add button.  The counter appeared in the right hand window.  When I click the OK button to return to the dialog collector set dialog the added counter does not appear in the performance counters window.  I made sure that I added the  log on as a batch job policy to administrators and performance log users groups before I tried this.  I also tried several other counters - same problem. What am I doing wrong?
