Is there are setting or configuration that we can make to MS Edge chromium or to Windows 10 that would allow local links to work?
The situation is that we have certain .pdf files that contain links to other .pdf files that are located in our document management system called M-Files.
The problem here is that if Edge is the default browser for the user the link will only open a blank new tab to Edge. If IE or Firefox is the default browser the browser asks is it okay to open the file and once clicked yes the document will open correctly.
The links look like this: m-files://show/document name....

I suggest you try to open the console by pressing the F12 key, then try to click the link that opens another pdf file.
See whether it shows any error or warning message in the console while clicking the link. If it shows any error/ warning then please try to provide information about it. It can give some idea about the cause of the issue.
Further, directly try to paste the URL of the link to the Edge address bar and press the Enter key, see whether it opens the pdf file or not?
Let us know which exact version of the Edge browser you are using for making this test?

Unfortunately I cannot see any errors in the developer console regarding this issue, only problems with the edge start page :
When I copy and paste the link directly to Edge it works correctly.
Our Edge is: Version 88.0.705.68 (Official build) (64-bit)

I try to search for any setting or configuration that can help Edge browser to launch the M-files:// properly but I did not get any solution for the said issue.
You said that it is working fine with the IE browser. if possible for you then just for testing purposes, you can try to load those specific pdf files using the IE mode in the Edge browser to check whether links work properly.
If it works then you can consider it as a workaround for this issue.
