I have no idea what caused the original problem, but another of my cats apparently walked across the keyboard and reversed it.
Sorry I can't post the actual solution...

The other day one of my cats walked across the keyboard, and hit some keys,
and screwed up my audio settings. The "foreground" and "background" tracks
seem to have been switched.
You know how, when you watch a TV show, the dialog is louder than the music &
other noises. Now these have been switched -- the music is loud, and the
dialog is barely audible. This occurred while I was watching a video, but I
also tried to stream a stored radio show and a live radio stream, and the same problem occurred, so it's not just a media player problem, but affects all programs.
I looked at every item in the Control Panel (I think) and could not find a
universal audio "reset" or anything that appeared to be a toggle between the
foreground/background. I don't want to randomly start clicking on things
unless I can reset to the previous state.
Since it was created on the keyboard, I have to believe that the solution is also on the keyboard, but I have no idea where to start!
Got any ideas? If it matters, I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Gateway computer.
