DirectX Issue

Hi there,

I am using a Windows 8.1 laptop and have been playing PC games (namely in this case rFactor) for quite some time. However I recently tried to install a very old game onto my laptop which needed me to install I believe version 6.3 (well 6. something) of DirectX. The game never worked for me, but that isn't my issue. My laptop seemed to work as always until I tried to go back on rFactor when it says that "no DirectX 9.0c video adapters found". This never happened before and I assume must have happened when I installed an older version on. However I still have version 11 (shown in the picture below) so I don't quite know what has happend. It's sort of like version 11 has been deactivated or overwritten by this older version, even though it has only affected rFactor (although there are other programmes I haven't tried yet). If anyone can tell me how to have DirectX 11 as the primary and active version again, or at least make my laptop believe that 9.0c is installed, then that would be fantastic.

Many thanks in advance,

Nathan.

    Thanks Jessen for the response.

Reinstalling rFactor didn't fix the issue. After playing around with my laptop more I've found way more strange issues occurring, which may or may not be related to the change in DirectX and my attempts to reinstall a newer version. For example all newer PC games will not work, but older ones (ie. from 2000 and before) do seem to still work. Google Chrome quite often does not read my preferences and MP4 files will no longer play in Windows Media Player. If I open my MP4 files in VLC player they work fine. If I try to open them in Windows Media Player it just says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.".

I have considered doing a PC Refresh but am a little worried, especially as the laptop came with windows 8, not 8.1 and I have heard that can be problematic to get 8.1 back after a PC refresh. I might be wrong but I don't really want to risk my laptop and losing all the files (even though that shouldn't happen) just to fix a few manageable issues. So would you recommend a PC Refresh or is there anything else I could possibly do to fix this issue.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Nathan.

    Hi Nathan,

I appreciate you for attaching the screenshot of the dxdiag report.

Since you say that the issue only happens with rfactor, I would request you to uninstall the game and then check if it helps.

    Thank you.

Having looked around I can say something that might be relevant.

I looked at the display tab of dxdiag and it says that DirectDraw Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration are both enabled. However Direct3D Acceleration is disabled. I don't know if these settings are normal but as I think I do indeed have DirectX11 installed (at least that's what it says) this might be the issue. As I say I don't know if this is abnormal, or how to change it. But if this is the issue then I would love to know how to enable Direct3D Acceleration.

    Many thanks in advance,,

    Nathan
