Windows Live Mail couldn't log on to the email server using authenticated POP (APOP). Contact your email provider and verify that it supports authenticated POP. To change this logon setting, in the folder list, right-click on the account name, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu. In the Properties dialog, click the Servers tab and then under Incoming Mail Server, select a logon option.
That's about the most comprehensive error message you'll ever see in Windows Live Mail. It tells you exactly what to do to correct it, except which option to select. No public mail service I know of uses APOP, so you have to select Log on using clear text authentication.
I took the advice of the technician to uninstall and reinstall and it still says this error message.
If you're not able to log on to a mail server, repairing, uninstalling and re-installing the program files will have no effect whatever. The fault is either in the account settings or at the server end.
