Thanks for replying. Though this happens on windows 7, there is no setup just windows updates.
The fact that this is happening to quite a few clients makes me suspect that isn't the cause.

I have a lot of clients which where the Windows Update log reports an 0x8024400D.

The computers connect through a corporate network though there is nothing to suggest that there are any configurations which would impede updates. The computers are configured to use BITS for updates and use Intune to go out to the internet to get them.
It would be really helpful to understand what the error means.

This error occurs if the session ID of the running Windows 10 setup is invalid. This may occur if the user logged off Windows while setup was running. Rename the following folders, and then check for updates again and you are done. The second folder is hidden.
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
C:\ $WINDOWS.~BT
Do not log off Windows before Windows 10 Setup is running!
