windows update errors

2016-03-06T16:23:09+00:00

followed the steps in every article and community post on the internet I could find to know avail.

haven't been able to install updates for quite some time.

If I install one update for example (security update for IE 10) I get one error:

800736b3

If I try to install a different update, say a optional security update I get a few errors:

I have tried the automated troubleshooter, I have installed the system readiness fix, I have tried resetting the update components manually.

My guess would be the user shut off the computer a long time ago during a lengthy "configuring, do not turn off computer" some time ago and something has been corrupt ever since.

I have ran various malware programs, nothing found, have norton antivirus installed with no issues found.

SFC /scannow fails in both regular mode and safemode.

I obviously cannot restore to a period prior to this problem because it started occurring so long ago, but just now looking at it, because of the additional issue below that just started.

Also, might be unrelated, but I recently restored this machine from a different machine using a 3rd party backup/clone utility, now windows backup fails, but might be related, although backup was working prior to moving to new hardware using the 3rd party.

so i should boot into PE environment and run the backup from a command line every night, that is not going to work.

the  backup doesn't run in "clean boot" mode, eliminating any other programs from being causal to the backup issue.

    thanks.

    Thanks for the  response.

I tried in a clean boot state (all startup items and all non-windows services disabled) and got the same error as above.

    I tried several different updates.

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to check in Clean Boot state as below and try to install the windows Update, check whether the issue persists or not.

Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

Follow the article How to perform a clean boot in Windows in the below link and check if it helps:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135 (Applies to Windows 10 as well).

NOTE : Once you perform clean boot do refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting” to boot the computer in normal mode.

Hope this information is helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.
