System Restore Failure

I had to resort to System Restore to try to resolve a current issue but the restore failed with the following error message:

System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore 0x80070005

I disabled the antivirus (Norton 360) but this made no difference so I completely removed the antivirus. This also produced the same error message.

Is there anything else which is likely to be causing this problem. Whilst I don't currently have a fundamental problem with my computer, it is rather uncomfortable knowing that System Restore doesn't seem to be available to me if ever I do need it.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

    Hello Richard,

I've been away for a couple of days. Strangely I had to sign up again to the Community in order to post this reply - hence I am now Badgebaby1 as well as Badgebaby - another issue to resolve!

I did try running System Restore in Safe Mode but this produced exactly the same result.

I am using Norton 360 which clearly has different Tabs/Menus to the version that your instructions are referring to. I have been unable to find what you describe but I do know that having completely removed my Norton 360 product that System Restore did not function.

Thank you for having responded to me and I hope that you will continue to follow up with this issue. I shall monitor the Community and respond more promptly to your further suggestions - assuming that I am able to log in properly!

    Many thanks,

    BB

Badgebaby and Badgebaby1 are both Active Profiles here.

There was no need for you to start another profile here.

You should have signed into Badgebaby

And as you have posted to the Windows 8.1 forums, do not download Windows 10 unless you want to buy it, as the free upgrade offer to 10 has expired.

    Regards.

    What I would do ...

    1. Uninstall all Virus Protection
    2. Download Windows 10

    Update now

We noticed you are running Windows 10. If you are looking to update to the latest version, click Update now.

    Hi,

We got your concern. We would like to know if you tried running your computer in safe mode and create a restore point? Since Norton is causing the issue, kindly follow these steps:

    1. Open Norton internet security.
    2. Click network settings.
    3. Miscellaneous settings.
    4. Go to Product security and to the off position.
    5. Click OK and log out Norton.
    6. Rerun system restore and it will run normally.

    Keep us updated.
