Completely remove McAfee

Hoping someone might be able to help.  I have decided to remove McAfee and simply use Windows Defender because McAfee was using so many resources that it grinds my PC to a halt.

I uninstalled McAfee, but when trying to turn on 'real time scanning' in windows defender, it wouldn't allow me to do this 'greyed out' and shows a message that another AV app is handling this.  So I have had to re-install McAfee for the interim.

After reading a many items in 'community', none of which seemed to be the resolution so I'm asking for advice:

How can I completely remove McAfee from my PC > uninstall app and ensure remove from registry?

I think once that is achieved I would be able to use Windows Defender in its entirety.

Hope you can help.

Did you also run the specific McAfee removal tool?

If not please do so now, see:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

direct download: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust\_support\_patches/MCPR.exe

After a reboot, Windows Defender should be automatically enabled.

If not, please try everything here: Problems starting Windows Defender in Windows 8/8.1/10
