windows 7 will not update Error code 80070490

I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit.  My computer will not update.  I have tried the cmd system & it found no corrupted files. I still get the error code 80070490 & it won't install.  I know this question has been addressed before & I've tried what I know how to try.  I am not tech savvy, so I need things spelled out.  I don't want Windows 10.  My computer still shows service pack 1.

This is a recent problem.  Can't find Mr Fix it - to try to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated in the easiest language possible.

Thanks!

I posted this issue on Aug 6th & have had a few replies.  I have done what is asked and added a link to OneDrive to show the logs, but then I get no further response as to what to do.

I'm at a total loss on how to get my updates working.

Any other suggestions on helping me????

    Thanks!

    Carol

    Hi Gerry,

Sorry it took so long to get this to you.  Not familiar at all with doing everything you mentioned.  I found the log  with CBS Sur & Sur Persist.  The 2nd one has errors.  I think I did the one drive correctly, but again never tried it before & totally unfamiliar with all of this.

I was able to upload some updates, but I'm failing at others.  I have a Gateway computer, but use a Dell monitor with no camera.  1 update was for Skype, so that's not possible.  One update that keeps failing is for my HP 6830 officejet pro all in one.  I collect & sell antique photography & need the scanner & printer, which are currently working, but I don't know what the update is for.

I tried reading the 2nd answer to my question & tried the update code KB3172605 which wouldn't let me restart my computer & was a total headache.

So any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you & again, sorry for the delay.

    Best,

    Carol

I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit.  I asked this question over a week ago & got a couple of responses, but did not get follow through help on this.  I am not a techie - so it takes me awhile to work through any response.  I did find errors in the systemroot/logs/cbs/ SUR.persist.log.  I know I'm not typing this correctly.  I don't know what to do now.  I uploaded the log to onedrive in my last question a week ago, but no answer on what to do with this problem.  My updates worked 1 time after I posted, but haven't since.

How do I fix this???  I have 1 important update & 6 optional updates that will not work.

    Can someone please help?

    Thank you!

    Carol

As appropriate please download and run the System Update Readiness Tool – 32 bit (x86 version)

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3132

    or

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool -64 bit version

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

The System Update Readiness Tool creates a log file that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. The log file is located at the following location:

    •%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

    •%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

The system root is normally C. If the files are not there, checkC:\windows\ logs\CBS.

You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the file. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Do not use Search to find the files. Open Windows Explorer (keyboard shortcut Win+E), locate and expand the file path (item 1 in the image below) Computer>Local Disk (C:)>Windows>Logs>CBS (item 2 below). Expand by clicking the arrowhead pointing right immediately before each folder in turn to see the next folder in the file path until you see the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log (item 3 below).

Please upload a copy of these logs to your OneDrive as shared files and post a link here.
