mouse pointer freezes on windows 8

Question

Tried suggested solutions on MS Community, does not seem to apply. Frequency of freezing pointer happens more and more.  Any simple solution short of uninstalling driver(s)?

The freezing issue is with the plug-in mouse on my HP laptop, the touch pad is still operating.  I used to unplug and re-plug and it works fine, now I must restart.  I am hesitant on downloading "freebies" as they usually sneak in a lot of "things" and I do not need, then I have to seek Norton's help to undo them all.....

Some of Bill's suggestions for repair above are great, but I'd like to know a little more details too.  For example, when your mouse freezes are you still able to type and press things like the WindowsLogo (to open Start) or Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

Thank you.  What do I look for in the Task Mgr?  My problem is freezing mouse pointer.  I've resort to restart to get the mouse pointer moving again.  The laptop has plenty memory.

Each Method/step below progresses to the next if the first does not fix any corrupted files that are found, etc.

Read this Section there in conjunction with the rest of the information they give in above link.

   Note

If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

If not, then run the **Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth**command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.

If still not, then try using OPTION ONE above to run the sfc /scannow command at boot

If still not, then you could do a refresh of Windows 8, or run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work.

If still not, then you can use the steps in the TIP box in the OPTION THREE section to manually replace the files that SFC could not fix.

Refreshing your PC goes like this:

• The PC boots into Windows RE (RecoveryEnvironment).

You can open up Task Manager to find out what is hogging your system's CPU and Memory, which will help you find out what is causing the freezing.  I wrote a simple post about it here: Fix a Sluggish, Slow PC
