login as localhost\admin not working

Question

hello, I have this problem on Windows 7/2008R2 machine

when i try to log using local account I have unknown user error:

it happens everywhere: when i try to log in as localhost\admin, when i try to run as as localhost\admin etc.

There is NO problem when i use .\admin, or <machinename>\admin

It looks like this particular machine doesn't know what localhost is

Any suggestions, maybe there is some alias somewhere that needs to be changed.
