The computer would not restart after being shut down. I'm dumber than a door nail when it comes to technical problems; however, I managed somehow to take the computer back to the supposed state when it was purchased. Successfully installed Security Essentials, but shign keeps popping up about the bad hard disk. Is a hard disk something I can get on line, or do I need the computer repaired? Computer is four or five year old HP, and I'm still using Windows 7.

Thank you for your help. No further help is needed. I decided to do a Bing search for ST3500314AS. Surprise! I found a link to your answer from January 2016. You said the computer needed to be serviced. I said that I'd wait. Looks like the time has come. I'm going to mark this question as "Solved my problem."

Sorry, can't tell without knowing the exact wording of the error message.
