I'm trying to enable hardware encryption on my lenovo y50 laptop. My OS is windows 8.1 professional, my hard disk is samsung 850 evo. I prepared the hard disk for encryption (encryption is enabled in samsung firmware). When I try to encrypt the hard drive i get this error:

This PC's firmware is not capable of supporting hardware encryption. Exception from HRESULT 0x803100BF"

What's causing  this error?

I reinstalled the system, using UEFI mode this time. Now it works perfectly fine.

The Samsung has firmware that can be updated too.

Yes it can be used. There are many tutorials how to do it. I performed it as i supposed to, but there is a problem with firmware. But what firmware? Bios? My bios is the latest version.

Have you verified that the 850 Evo can be used with Bitlocker? Not all SSDs can.
