Stop Windows Explorer from Automatically Creating ID3 Tags

Hi there,

I just recently installed the Windows 10 Creator's update (1703). I download music often to my downloads folder and these .mp3 files have always only had the name field filled out (for example, songtitle.mp3). Now after the update, when downloading music to this folder, Windows Explorer automatically chooses a song title, artist name, and album name, all of which are typically completely wrong. I also have the auto retrieve/download information settings within Windows Media Player turned off so that should not be the issue.

I prefer to edit my ID3 tags manually within Windows Media Player, how do I prevent Windows Explorer from doing this?

Thank you!

Jake Stiebler

Thanks for updating - yes, get back with screenshots if necessary (I may not be online again until tomorrow) - Cheers, R.

Any ideas on what may be the issue? I've definitely isolated the problem to be Windows Explorer caused. The files are affected before WMP gets the chance to interact with them. The downloads folder was initially optimized for music, I then changed it to be optimized for general items but the problem still prevails. Could this be a registry or permissions issue?

As for the details tabs of the folder, I have them manually set to be: name, type, size, date modified, title, contributing artist, album, genre. Before the update the downloaded songs would only have the name field filled out (my preference as I would rather change the tags manually and correctly), now when downloading from the same website every firld listed above gets filled in, sometimes correctly, most of the time incorrectly.

    Thanks,

    Jake

Hi Jake - could you put up an example screenshot of before and after properties details tabs so that I can see this? I would lean towards this being the result of a setting in WMP but seeing what is changing would help pin it down...  Thanks Ric.

    POST A SCREENSHOT

I will post a screenshot later if need be as I am cureently away from my computer using my mobile phone. The details tabs for before and after are as follows: name, type, size, date modified. However, once I transferred the music files to my designated music folder (with details tabs such as: title, artist, album) of which WMP reads from is when I noticed that the tags were all automatically created and were wrong. So I downloaded some more music to the original download folder, this time with the title, artist, and album details tabs visible, I could now see that it was indeed the download folder that was causing the issue.
