Older PC, AMD2500+ processor, 2GB RAM  just upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Pro. Experiencing several Windows update errors attempting to install several security updates. Error codes encountered include "Windows Update 800705B4", "Windows Update dt000",  8007000E, Error code FF, error code 80070020. I have tried the Network troubleshooter and the Windows Update troubleshooter, still getting errors. Anyone in the community familiar with these errors have a reasonable solution?

    Hi LRB,

It seems that there are several updates trying to install at once. Let's make sure first that you get to update your Windows first before trying to install updates for other Microsoft products. Follow these steps:

    1. Open Control Panel > Windows Update.
    2. In the left pane, click Change settings.
    3. Look for Microsoft Update, uncheck the Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows option, then click OK.
    4. Go back to Windows Updates, then click Check for updates.
    5. Once you've successfully installed the Windows Updates, go back to Change settings, then re-select the Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows option.
    6. Check for updates again.

Please update this thread with the result. Looking forward to hear from you.

    Regards.

At 10164, step 4, parts of 971058 have been simplified to death:

Install Windows 7 again. At "Set up Windows", select "Ask me later"

otherwise 7.6.7600.320 will be installed again. Download and install KB3138612 (Update Client March 2016, version 7.6.7601.19161):

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

Windows 7 SP1 by default installs a version released June 2014 that's near-unusable by now.

The version number can be retrieved by looking up properties of wuauclt.exe, located at Windows/System32.

    Regards, VZ

I am not sure the best way to find that out. I don't see a Version listed on the page or any "About" tab to click for the Version. Looking at the Installed update history Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 was successfully installed.
