Cant access my own "users" folder through network

Hi

Im set up on a private network, I can access other computers on it, they cant access mine. and I cant even access mine, not when I go through network anyway. when I click on my network, select my device, then I click on "users", it says "windows cannot access \DEVICE-NAME\Users", when I click on Diagnose, it says "The remote device or resource wont accept the connection". When I click on view detailed information, it says (The device or resource (DEVICE-NAME) is not set up to accept connections on port "The File and printer sharing (SMB)")

Note that I can access the "users" folder if I go through my computer/C/Users, and I can access my public folder from there.

some steps I have already done: I have enabled all sharing options (make PC discoverable, turn on network discovery, file and printer sharing...etc) on all networks (even public), also made sure that these services are started and set to automatic (1. DHCP Client 2. DNS Client 3. Network Connections 4. Network Location Awareness 5. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) 6. Server 7. TCP/IP Netbios helper 8. Workstation 9. Function Discovery Resource Publication, 10. UPnP Device Host services) and disabled firewall for private networks. Also selected "enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" under TCP/IP settings in my network.

I have a homegroup enabled

so... anything else I can do, or do I simply a faulty wifi adapter

computer model: Dell XPS 15

OS: WIndows 10 Home 64 bits

all suggestions are welcome

    Hi,

After joining the existing network, have you checked if others in the network are now able to access your device or the shared folder under your name? If they are still having issues accessing the shared folder, it could be due to improper folder Security settings. Check if you were able to give permission to every device in your network to read and write the particular folder. After granting sharing permission to everyone, make sure that the shared folder is accessible from any computer. Be guided by the steps below:

Step 1: Give sharing permission to everyone

    1. Right-click on the folder what you want to share.
    2. In that folder’s Properties, select the Sharing tab and click on the Advanced Sharing button.
    3. Put a check mark next to the Share this folder option.
    4. Click on the Permission button.
    5. Now give Everyone the full permission.

Step 2: Make the shared folder accessible from any computer

    1. Go back to the folder’s Properties window again, select the Security tab from the top menu and click on the Edit button.
    2. Click on the Add button.
    3. Click on the Advanced button to find the user name.
    4. Click on the Find Now button to show the list of all available users.
    5. Find the user name called Everyone from that list, select it and click OK.
    6. You’ll now see the username Everyone shown in the Users and Groups setting. Click OK to add this user in the main security list.
    7. Click on the Everyone, put a check mark next to the Full control option, and click Apply.

Keep us updated with the results.

    thank you for your reply

1- yes i can access user files when i go through users, I can even access the public folder that way, however when I go through the network, it wont work, as described in my initial post.

2- this is interesting, I just realized i dont have group policy on my windows, or cant access it, i tried running gpedit.msc, but windows cant find it (see image below), i tried going through windows search, through command prompt, didnt work

I hope this helps in diagnosing the problem

Thank you for your response. Have you tried accessing the local files using this format (?): file:///C:/Users/username/Downloads/

Please check this under the Group Policy settings. Check the photo below:

    Regards.

    Thank you Leviozar

Im not sure what do you mean by ethernet properties, since I dont have an ethernet port on my laptop, heres a screenshot of the wifi port properties though

(all other items under wifi properties below IPv6 are enabled)

SMB1.0/ CIFS File sharing support is ticked (enabled)

I tried the IE workaround in this user and in another user account, while disabling firewall and antivirus, did not help, I couldnt access the web though, until I restored IE settings

    awaiting your feedback

    Hi,

We would like to isolate this issue that you're having right now. Please send a screenshot of your Ethernet Properties that can be found on Control Panel*Network**and Internet*Network Connections.

What is the status of the SMB1.0/ CIFS Ficle sharing support under the: Control Panel / Programs and Features / Turn Windows Features On or Off

    Let's try the following workaround:

Please open IE>Tools> Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings>Uncheck the option “Automatically detect settings” and click Apply & OK, re-open IE.

Temporarily turn off firewall and anti-virus.

If doesn’t work, please test IE with another user account, if you don’t have, please just create one for a test. You can create one by going to Control Panel>User accounts>Manage user account>add a new account.

We will wait for your response.

    Regards.
