Had the same issue. AOL just stopped. Easy fix.

In Windows Live Mail, go to Email Accounts. Go to the Advanced tab, check the both boxes that say: "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)

Outgoing number will change to 25 and Incoming will change to 993.

That is all it took for my AOL emails to to start working again.

Ok, so I left the post a bit quickly. I was excited as my emails came in, but I could no longer send. Found this on AOL. I use the IMAP. Had to make still check the box to make a secure connections using 465 (outgoing) and 993 (incoming.)

    POP3 Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.aol.com

Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com

Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail server. POP3 - 995 - SSL

SMTP - 465 - SSL
IMAP Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.aol.com

Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com

Make sure SSL encryption is enabled for the incoming and outgoing mail server. IMAP - 993 - SSL

SMTP - 465 - SSL

Server Response: Cannot connect to IMAP server 64.12.88.129 ...

That is a bogus message! The server cannot respond if you 'cannot connect' to it.

The message is coming from Avast's Mail Shield, which wants to handle the secure connection instead of allowing Windows Live Mail to do it. Disable the Mail Shield and restart the computer. You don't need mail scanning and Avast will keep you safe anyway with its real-time file system protection.
