Folder security after relocating user folders

Hello,

I have a C-drive (system) and a D-drive (data).

After I install Windows 10, I move user folders to my D-drive by relocating the Documents, Pictures, Videos etc. folders within Properties|Location. This seems to be an official function within Windows.

However, by using this Windows feature the security is inherited from the D-drive, so the security is wrong after the folder move. This results in all users receiving access to all folders.

Questions:

  • is there an official Windows feature for moving the complete User-folder to the D-drive with a single action (instead of moving all subfolders?
  • Is there a way to keep the original security settings for the User-folders instead of inheriting them from the D-drive?

Thanks in advance,

SJW

1 No because some of the folders within the User Profile must remain on the original drive. Although there is a registry key that defines the Profile location (ProfileImagePath) some applications will use the UNC path with the variable to overcome being able to install Windows on another disk. (%SystemDrive%\Users*username*.

When you use the Location tool the original folder remains to catch incorrectly directed files.

2When a folder is created the default security settings are applied which includes inheriting permissions from the parent. You could create a container folder 1st and amend its setting before doing the move.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. So far, this is not feature available yet to move the user folder to the D drive.

Also, it is by design that the security of the user folder will depend on the storage where it was stored.
