Black screen when drivers update

My computer had a black screen (could not see anything or do anything), I thought it might be hard drive related as a couple of years old and making some noise, as I had done backups (with Norton 360), I ended up wiping the drive and re-installing windows 10.  I used the  windows tool ( did not put in my product key) and made a new user thinking I could sort any errors. was going to sort the problem if easy , then replace the hard drive with a new one (re-install windows 10) and get my back ups, I am still trying to find the problem which seems to be when the AMD drivers are installed the screen goes black.

I assume it is some sort of driver issue as its working with the Microsoft basic display adapter. (unless it os suggested hardware issue?)

    Thanks again,

cheers for the link, I had tried that

Video Card Drivers (ATI/AMD) 135.23 MB

page link then fails (he requested page "/system/files/downloads/VGA_113.zip" could not be found)

when I do an update from AMD for the drivers I get a black screen (do not have the expertise to download older drivers to see if they work)

    cheers

To me it sounds like the graphics card driver may need updating.

    Here’s a list of drivers:

    http://www.adventcomputers.co.uk/product-downlo...

When you reinstall Windows it usually downloads the basic drivers from the Microsoft site so you should update them with the ones from the supplier/manufacturer’s website.

As to buying a new pc & using your current windows 10 key is the key a retail purchase did it come pre-installed on a pc or was it given as a free upgrade from a previous version? From what I know only retail version of Windows 10 can be transferred.

    Hi Virginia,

    thanks for the reply.

the screen will go black if I update the drivers using the AMD update tool from the website (I then have to press the power button to re start, boot up is a tad slower than I remember before these issues.

No USB had drives are connected,

fairly sure the graphics driver is not up to date (graphics card not seen in device manager, only Microsoft generic driver)

are you suggesting I sign in to complete the 1709 update ?

I was unsure if signing in would then possibly give me problem using the new hard drive if I can work out the issue ?

as computers are very unique (in regards to problems with them), I was toying with the idea of buying a new computer without an OS and installing windows 10 from my product key ? (as a last resort if no other fixes help with this set up)

Hello Richard, I’m Virginia a volunteer on this site & not affiliated to Microsoft.

At what point are you seeing the black screen?

If on boot up how long have you waited to see if the desktop appears?

Are there any USB hard drives connected upon startup?

Is use your sign in details to

If the black screen occurs during use is the graphics driver up to date?

Also turn off use sign-in info to auto finish setting up device after update or restart in Windows 10.

For Windows 10 (Version 1709), select the Start button, select Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, then make sure Use my sign in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart is turned off.

For previous versions of Windows 10, select the Start button, select Settings > Update & security > Window Update > Advanced options, then select the check box next to Use my sign in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update.
