I purchased a gaming computer and gaming monitor. After about 4 months suddenly upon reboot the monitor goes blank but the computer is on. Here is what I have to do which makes no sense.

I take another monitor and hook up to the computer and reboot to the log in. I then log in and everything is fine. I then disconnect the monitor and reconnect the gaming monitor, reboot and the new monitor will work.

What is going on???

Thanks

Paul

Hello and thanks for the information. The PC stays on during this event, just the monitor goes blank. Yes I have tryed the monitor on another PC and it does not work. I got both on Ebay from two different vendors. There are three fans in the PC already plus the fan on the video card. I will check the resolution. I do have a external hard drive constantly attached via usb for backup.

You mean the new monitor does not work at all on the other computer or that it also fails (turns black)? If does not work check with that computer maker's support and forums to see if it should operate (if it connects it should work.) If it also fails on the other computer then it is the new monitor with the hardware issue.

Definitely get the System and Monitor Maker's Support involved while it is still in warranty.

Hi Paul, I am Rob a volunteer and a 10 time and dual award MVP specializing in Windows troubleshooting and Bluescreen analysis.

Does the PC crash/shutdown when the monitor goes black?

It could be the PC or the monitor, though it does sound like the PC. Have you tried that new monitor on another computer?

That sure sounds like a hardware problem such as the new monitor be driven at a higher resolution/freq. which causes the video card or associated circuitry on the motherboard to fail. Try driving it at much a lower resolution/freq, just to see if that helps. Also, try adding a fan blowing into the PC case.

Have you manually updated the video driver by checking at the video device maker's site and ask their support and forums for known issues.(see methods I am asking you to use below.)

Check with the PC maker's support, drivers, and forums for known issues. Update the BIOS, chipset drivers, and major drivers.

Be sure you are running the latest BIOS and chipset drivers then manually update the video driver.

Download the latest and any other older driver you wish to try from the System/Motherboard Maker's Site and also check the actual video device maker (such as Intel, Nvidia or AMD/ATI). Do not install yet.

    Make a Restore Point :

Start - type in --> Restore ......... find at top and click on - then use Create

Use this method to remove the present video drivers.

    Display Driver Uninstaller

Then install the desired driver you previously downloaded.

    =====

This is what I would do especially if the above does not help.

Since the computer is still under warranty please contact System Maker's Support and the seller. As OEM they are responsible for the proper operation of both the hardware and Windows. So regardless of the cause it is theirs to resolve. And the unit is under full warranty and may be in need of repairs or replacement. Added that even if you are able to resolve the issue you would want it fully documented just in case there are related problems down the road. Remember the more you do the more they will say it is something you have done.

Please let us know the results and if you need further assistance.
