I am currently running Windows Server 2012 Standard. Can I upgrade to Windows Server 2016 Standard using my 2012 key? The key didn't come on a pre-built system. I believe it is an OEM key.

    Hi @Zach Baardsen
Installing Windows server 2016 requires a Windows server 2016 license in order to comply with licensing requirements. You cannot use a server license for an upgraded version. No OEM or previous Windows OS, You need a server 2016 license and need server 2016 product keys.
An in-place upgrade allows you to go from an older operating system to a newer one, while keeping your settings, server roles, and data intact. This article helps you to move from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2016.
