Issue Creating System Image Backup

Anonymous

I'm trying to create a system image backup, and it is continuously failing and giving the following message:

Windows Backup failed to get an exclusive lock on the EFI system partition (ESP). This may happen if another application is using files on the ESP.  Please retry the operation. (0x8078011E)

Additional Information:

Access is denied. (0x80070005)

I retried the backup, then performed a full format on the external drive and restarted my computer, than retried again and get the same message above.  I haven't been able to identify any program that might get in the way.  Help?

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Windows update

Yep, that did it!  I just uninstalled Avast (my preferred third-party antivirus) and was able to run the backup without any problems.  Thanks for the help!

Windows backup & file history are being depreciated & will eventually be removed, what you’re experiencing may be related to that.

Microsoft recommend moving to third party imaging software.

Many users recommend Macrium Reflect free:
