Hi,

Does anyone know if any version of windows 10 checks periodically against the activation key used. ie can you activate it via the internet, then disconnect and leave it for a year, with it still activated?

Hi Sam. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Any retail version of Windows, once it is activated, will remain activated without needing to check in with Activation servers.

Only Volume License keys used by businesses and organizations need to periodically check in with their home servers to have activation renewed.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

It depends on how it's activated. If it's a Volume License Key then it needs to check in with the server to reactivate regulary. You'd be better off buying a retail copy. Enterprise is a business copy activated by business licenses.

    >Would this apply to Windows 10 enterprise 2016 LTSB?

Depends on what type of Enterprise License you have i.e. MAK or KMS. If it is a KMS license, it does need to check periodically with activation servers.

Thank you for your quick reply.

    This does answer my question.

Would this apply to Windows 10 enterprise 2016 LTSB? I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question. But say i would need to activate a machine that would then be used in an environment with no internet access. What would be the best version of Windows 10?

I was assuming the LTSB. However, if after a period of time, would this become unactivated?

    Thanks

Hi Sam, It is only the volume licence versions of Windows that need to be re-armed on a regular basis.

If you purchase Windows, Say the Home or Pro version, once you activate it, that will be all you need to do, unless you ever need to re-install Windows 10, then you will have to reactivate again

Are you getting a ;Windows Will Expire soon' message?
