Error Code 0x80780169

My computer was unable to complete my first backup to an external driver due to an Error Code - 0x80780169.  It suggested I repair using VSSAdmin Resize ShadowStorage command.  As a 'non-tech' senior citizen, how do I go about resolving this issue?  The reason I decided to back up my system, was because I started getting little (about 2") black squares - initially when I was on my facebook page on or near pictures so thought the computer might crash and I'd lose my photos.  I saw a website called 'greatchoice.com' inviting me to download a repair tool for this but a) don't know whether to trust the site and b) am hoping Microsoft will be able to resolve this for me easily.
