I keep getting updates for KB2310138, but none of them ever install. This has been happening for quite some time. How do I fix it?

This is what happens:

Install Failed: Error 80070005 then Try Again

Download Failed: 0% complete

Hide Update

I documented the error for about a week.

    Thank you Bill,

I tried #1 and 2, but that didn't fix it.

    #3 The folders didn't exist.

#4 The SSU appears to be for Windows 10

#5 I'm not going to do that.

Try updating from within MSE is a figure of speech.

    Ignore the sarcasm from ElderN

Trying things are unlikely to help.  Doing things is more likely to help.

Errors like 80070005 (those that end with 0005) are access denied, rights, permissions kinds of things.

For Windows Update the problem is usually a third party antivirus/antimalware application that is "protecting" your system from changes.

Sometimes booting the system in Safe Mode when the AV program should not be loaded will allow WU to complete - or you may be able to temporarily disable some of the protections in the AV.

Sometimes it may be necessary to temporarily uninstall the offending AV program, reboot, perform the updates, reinstall the offending AV.

Note that this problem is unheard of if you are running MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials).

Chances are very good that if you check the help/support pages of the third party AV they are going to have considerable discussions about how you might get WU working.

Surely you do have these folders:

    Rename software distribution backup folders

But those folders are hidden and that little bit of instruction will not work even if you reveal the hidden folders (give it a shot) and the consequences of that which nobody seems to tell you about is that your Windows Update history will be wiped out (and perhaps some other consequences).

If your problem is just with MSE what happens if you just update definitions from within MSE - or you can also consider just uninstall/reinstall it?
