I am trying to use a USB-RS232 lead on my laptop.  I cannot create any COM ports and none are there by default.  If I try this on my desktop it works perfectly.  When trying to create a COM port I get an invalid parameter error and the creation fails

Hi RobinBirch,

Since you have mentioned that "I cannot create any COM ports and none are there by default" and it is working properly on your desktop, it seems that you're having compatibility issues with your USB-RS232 lead on your laptop. I would suggest that you reach out to HP's support for more in-depth troubleshooting of the issue.

Let us know if you have other queries.

I solved it.  The problem was that Windows would not allow a driver to correctly install.  I copied the driver from the desktop \program files (x86) directory and forced the device manager to install those.  This worked.  Very clunky mechanisms around this unless the thing works straight out of the box.
