Failure to install

Anonymous

My computer keeps trying (and failing) to install 'English (GB) optical character recognition' and 'English (GB) typing' every 10-20mins even though I'm running US keyboard and language.

The constant attempts to update and failing, is driving me crazy!

Please help!

    Hi again Max.

In researching this I found this thread which has the only known solution that worked for many others: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

I realize it pertains to Version 1709 but try it anyway and if those are not still the correct .cab files we will find them.

Also if it's Task Scheduler that's driving these repeated attempts then you can type that in Start Search, right click to Run As Admin, click on Library in left column, scroll through to find the scheduled task and disable it.

If you don't yet have Version 1803 this may be why it's happening because it was solved in the later version. To manually Upgrade to the latest version install Media Creation Tool from this link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m..., open the tool, choose Upgrade this PC now.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Greg,

    Thanks for this!

I have gone through the list and have tried everything on it... including doing a Malware check, blocking all automatic updates to manually update, and try to do a System Restore, except unfortunately this has been happening for a few weeks now and the restore history doesn't go back far enough.

The unwanted installations keep failing on a very regular basis still... it's very annoying indeed!

I have included a screenshot for you to have a look at as well.

    Cheers

Max, when did this start? Was it after Windows Updates were installed? If so I'd System Restore to before that point and hope it stops. If it starts again then I'll help you check which Updates were installed so one or more can be blocked to stop this. https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent...

Are your language settings satsifactory as they are and you never wanted to make changes?

Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues (sometimes like this one), then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for getting back to me!

I neve ordered these features, which is why I'm so baffled as to why they're trying to install...?

I actually don't want them, nor need them, so anything I can do to stop them from installing would be great!

Hi Max. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Did you order these features yourself? Are you trying to install them or trying to stop them now from installing?

If you cannot stop this during the install process in Windows Update settings or in Language settings, then try to System Restore to a point before this started to see if that will stop it: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

Then please tell us exactly what you need and we'll get it sorted out for you.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
