Run "Regedit".

Right click on the registry areas noted below.

Select "Permissions..." and the "Advanced" button.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SECURITY

Type - "Allow" for all

Inherited from - "None" for all

Principal - Access - Applies to

SYSTEM - Full Control - This key and subkeys

Administrators - Special - This key and subkeys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

Type - "Allow" for all

Inherited from - "None" for all

Principal - Access - Applies to

Users - Read - This key and subkeys

Administrators - Full Control - This key and subkeys

SYSTEM - Full Control - This key and subkeys

CREATOR OWNER - Full Control - This key and subkeys

ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES - Read - This key and subkeys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM

Type - "Allow" for all

Inherited from - "None" for all

Principal - Access - Applies to

Users - Read - This key and subkeys

Administrators - Full Control - This key and subkeys

SYSTEM - Full Control - This key and subkeys

CREATOR OWNER - Full Control - This key and subkeys

ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES - Read - This key and subkeys

The issue I am having is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, the following should be set CREATOR OWNER - Full Control - This key and subkeys, my CREATOR OWNER - Full Control – subkeys only and I cannot change this to the correct setting. When I edit the CREATOR OWNER and set the Applies to This key and subkeys I click apply and it reverts back to the subkey only setting. Any suggestions?

Thank you. That looks like it worked. I did notice that if I go in and change anything else the Creator Owner reverts back to subkeys only. I have to back in and change again. Also I have an Account Unknown, looks like your one above:Allow, Read only and has a lot of numbers after the Account Unknown. Would you know how to remove this one also. I tried the same steps but there is not an Owner that is named Account Unknown.

    Thank you.

I got started changing security settings years ago because it upset me when I was denied access to something.

It took a while to learn how to get it right.

Changing the registry is a serious matter.

One could make their computer unusable.🤢🤢🤢

    Mine is still working.

    I haven't rebooted yet though.

One should restart after making changes in the registry.

I have my Macrium image in case I need it.

    I fiddled with it.

    Here are some screenshots ---

It froze up a couple of times but eventually worked.

I have a Macrium system image to use in case I broke something.

    Hi Phillip,

The Windows Registry is somewhat like an archive of information collection that contains settings and configuration values for programs and hardware that are installed in a Windows computer. It is also one of the most complex section in Windows. We would love to help you on this query, but we're afraid that the complexity of your query is beyond our scope of support.

Please  post this thread under Social Technet: Windows 10 IT pro > General. The dedicated IT experts and programmers will be able to address your query beyond how we could. Feel free to update us in case you would love to.

    Best regards.
