Windows 7 Update KB4103718 Error Code 80073701

Question

Windows 7 x64

Update I am trying to download is KB 4103718

It "downloads" and attempts to install but I get error: Code 80073701

On repeated attempts to install this update, it seems like Windows isn't downloading the whole update before trying to install. The update is 221MB but Windows Update downloads like 22mb and says its 99% downloaded and then finishes downloading and attempts to install the update.

I have tried clean boot and I have ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter diagnostic tool or whatever it's called.

Let's try another troubleshooting steps. Please try reinstalling the Windows 7 Service Pack 1. This will help fix corrupted system components.

Hi Mike,

Error 0x80073701 is ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING, it means there are some system files are missing, which caused the update installation failure. To resolve the issue please try the following:

1. Run System File Checker tool.
2. Examine the language packs installed on the system. Uninstall the unnecessary language packs.

I have the same error and the system file checker tool found no issues "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.".  I have no language packs installed other than the default English.

Since the computer came with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed you are basically asking me to reinstall the whole operating system.  Lets not go for the nuclear option yet because that will only hide the issue.
