Automatically Update SharePoint Master Page Headers

I have been tasked to fix a SharePoint Master page so that the headers (anchor links to subsites) also appear on the master page of the subsites. Currently they are not doing so, but I was told they used to inherit until someone messed with it. I am not familiar with SharePoint master pages, that is why I have come here to seek guidance. I have watched some YouTube videos in customizing Master Pages (implement custom footer), and read through many SharePoint Master Page related articles on this site as well as the SharePoint StackExchange site. Nothing that I have come across is in relation to what I am trying to do. Can anyone point me in a right direction?

    It seems that you want the subsites to inherit the site master page from the parent site. If so, you may have a try below settings:
