Hello,
I am having trouble completing the circuit for two way ethernet communication. I have a laptop running windows 10 home connected via ethernet to a desktop running windows 10 pro. I am able to access files on my desktop through my laptop via ethernet. However, I am unable to do the reverse. I am unable to access files on laptop through my desktop via ethernet.

Yes, currently I have configured my network to be private. Running the network troubleshooter gives me the following error message:

Settings > Network & Internet > Change Connection Properties
Not necessarily. What worked for me was changing to a Private network, running the network troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot which is what flagged the wrong network setting. But I believe that's all covered in the tutorials I gave you.
If those all fail then you might need to use the crossover cable since they are built for this.
Hello Greg,
I read through the links you have provided. These are the same procedures I used before. The only thing different is the crossover cable. Is it important that I use a crossover cable for computer to computer ethernet communication?
