Error Message, when attempting to access a "Windows XP shared Printer" from "Windows 10" (0x00000180)

For historical reasons, we have a machine running Windows XP (not connected to the internet) - and theres a printer attached, which is "shared".

Recently, I needed to add this printer to a new Windows 10 Machine - which just failed.

Using the regular Way of:

  • Printers & Scanners
  • Add Printer
  • The Printer that I want isn't listed
  • Select a shared printer by name:

 --- \XP-machine\printershare

resulted in an error (No references to the errorcode on google, so it doesn't really exist):

Also the "regular autocomplete" when providing "\xp-machine" just showed "nothing"...

Only the attempt of trying to create a "manual" (local) printer connection, providing the share-name as "port name" showed what's the

actual cause:

**Solution:**Don't access XP-Printer Shares from Windows 10. (If it's considered unsecure, you should avoid it if possible!)

Workaround:(On the Windows 10 Machine, attempting to access the XP-Share)

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off > check  the box for "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" (Client is enough)

**Suggestion to Microsoft:**Update the error Message, when adding printers "automatically".

Just doing nothing or showing "0x00000180" doesn't help at all.

(The proper error message is already THERE and working for "manually added connections"  - Why leaving users using the MORE RECENT way "in the dark?")

Who do you think you're talking it? I'm a senior Moderator here and 9 year MVP.

Just yesterday I installed an older printer to a network PC across the network by running the software .exe in Compatibility mode.

Next time read the links before spouting off in less than a minute to a Moderator.

Is this a bot or general knowledge of an "installation specialist and 9 year Windows MV"?

Don't need to run any exe-file when accessing a network shared printer, tbh.

    cheers.

No offence, but maybe next time YOU should read the question, before recommending what you did just yesterday!
