Now my Windows 7 Pro will not update or, at least, relays that the install failed. Tried numerous times.

    Hi Mason,

To better manage this thread related to Windows Update, I'd like to verify if the issue persists. If so, I'd like to ask you a few questions:

    • What is the KB number of the Windows Update that you're trying to install?
    • Are you getting any error messages or error codes? If so, a screenshot of it is highly appreciated.
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far to resolve your concern?

As an initial troubleshooting steps, I'd recommend following the methods below:

Method 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

To do this, download this troubleshooter on this link, locate the file in the download folder, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Then, follow the on-screen prompts.

Note: After running the troubleshooter, try installing the said Windows Update again and check if the issue persists.

Method 2: Temporarily disable the security software installed on your device to prevent any conflicts that's causing this issue.

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3: Run System Update Readiness tool.

To run the System Update Readiness tool, click on this link, download it under For Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 section, locate the file in the download folder, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Then, follow the on-screen prompts. Once done, try installing the Windows Update again and check if the issue persists.

Feel free to post back for an update with the outcome and let us know if you need more help.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium and after restoring factory default (I had failed to make recovery DVD) I was 176 updates behind and installation was failing. I did a clean reboot, turned off anti-virus and firewall, turned off automatic update and am installing security updates 1 at a time. After getting all the comprehensive security updates installed I am going to try installing 10 or 20 updates at a time otherwise this process will occupy all my time. However I am happy to have gotten rid of Windows 10 which Microsoft installed without my permission. Hopefully since Windows 10 is no longer offered as a freebie upgrade I will never see it again.

Nothing works and I have attempted everything suggested. I am so frustrated and disappointed in the support from Microsoft. I just wish there was another operating system available with the excepting of Apple. Now I am getting to the point where my next laptop just might be an Apple.

Again I will attempt to answer. It is so frustrating in trying to get help with Microsoft. How do you get the screenshot to work in this format? When I tried to directly reply to email message, it bounces back. I do know how to add a screen shot to a normal email- thru Dropbox or otherwise to clipboard.

To summarize, I have tried all the above. I just might have some of the updates installed, but updates keep attempting to install and fail. Maybe the screenshot with this link:

    I appreciate any help.

    Mason
