    Hi,

I would like to check whether this issue occurred on all VMs or just on a specific VM. If all VMs cannot create checkpoints, you can try to restart VMMS.

If the issue only occurred on a specific VM, based on the event ID you gave me, It is suggested to you to conduct the following troubleshooting:

1.Open your Hyper-V Manager, In VM settings>>integration service, I'd like you to make sure that you have clicked on "Backup" and "Guest services" :

2.I'd also like you to check which type of checkpoint did you choose in VM settings>>Checkpoints: production one or standard one. You can try to switch the current one you have chosen to the other one, to see if it works on your issue.

3.I'd also like you to open event viewer>> Applications and Services>> Microsoft>> Windows>> Hyper V VMMS, to check if there are any other related error logs. If so, please provide them to us, so that we can help you to do further investigation.

4.Moreover, I suggest you to check whether your disk storage for your checkpoints (the VHDx. file and the AVHD. files) is enough.

If the above steps still not work, please feel free to feedback and we’ll do further research.

    Thank you for your time!

    Best regards
    Joann

    Hi,

    Thank you for the suggestions.

We are able to take "Checkpoints" when Checkpoint type switched to "Standard" from "Production". However, it is failing when we again changed the type to "Production". Please refer below screenshot from event viewer>> Applications and Services>> Microsoft>> Windows>> Hyper V VMMS path for the error details,

Also, may we know which checkpoint type is better to configure and proceeded with?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your reply!

I'm glad to hear that you solved the problem after using standard checkpoints.

Generally, standard checkpoint only saves the CPU and memory in the current state of the VM. As for what is doing inside the VM, it does not know. Because the standard checkpoint captures the state, data and hardware configuration of the running virtual machine, it is suitable for development and testing scenarios. Standard checkpoints are also useful for administrators who need to recreate specific states or conditions of running virtual machines to resolve problems.

Product checkpoint will trigger the VSS service in the VM. The application registered with the VSS writer in the VM will save the operation being done in the application, but the actual CPU and memory will not be saved. The state of applications that do not have a VSS writer in the VM will not be saved. More information about the two checkpoints can be seen from:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/manage/choose-between-standard-or-production-checkpoints-in-hyper-v

As you can see, the key difference between the two types of checkpoints is whether to use VSS service. This VSS writer allows developers to utilize the existing VSS infrastructure to backup virtual machines. However, it is designed for small scale back-up operations where all virtual machines on a server are backed up simultaneously. So, you may have to check if VSS service is suitable to your conditions. More information you can check about VSS service can be seen from:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/reference/hypervbackupapproaches

    Thank you for your time!

    Best regards
    Joann
