We're in the middle of a carveout of one of our companies and they'll be taking some data with them. We need to ensure that all content on several SharePoint sites is not protected. Therefore I need to unprotect or change classification of all the files in those sites.

Is there any way how to do that in-place (i.e. PowerShell) so all that content is not needed to be synced and processed locally?

    Hi Emily,

we're using Sensitivity labels and AIP to classify our content. We have several labels like "Internal", "Confidential", "Strictly confidential". And some of these labels also apply protection (encryption).

There are several sites now which content will need to be soon completely transferred outside of our company (content related to business which was completely sold). As the content migration will be most likely done on tenant to tenant level, we need to make sure that ALL the content on those sites will be accessible also after the migration to the other tenant. Therefore if there are any documents protected by specific sensitivity labels, then those will be inaccessible after the migration.

My question is, if content can be:

    • reclassified = sensitivity label changed
    • un-protected = in case there is label applying protection, then just the protection removed or the complete sensitivity label removed

and all this in bulk for all site content.
