i have been using windows 8.1 for years and was told I can update to windows 10 for free . is this possible and how

When Windows 10 was first released, the offer for a free upgrade was available, but it ended on July 29, 2016.

You can purchase and download Windows 10 on your device.
Although, if your computer is more than three years old, it might be time to consider upgrading to a new device.
