Blue Screen Error

Ever since a Windows update (for Windows 10 ver. 1809) that installed earlier in Oct. 2018, I've been been getting a blue screen of death when I'm connected to my work programs through a VPN. I've gotten two stop codes:

  • system service exception
  • driver irql not less or equal

What failed is always listed as "ngvpn.sys" (which I'm assuming means the Aventail VPN my work uses). i'm really assuming it's the VPN that's causing the blue screen because I have been on my computer for hours and nothing has happened while I wasn't connected to the VPN.

Side note: Weirder is that it's never a consistent amount of time until it crashes. Sometimes, it's one minute logged in to the VPN until it crashes. Other times, it's an hour.

I've tried going back to a restore point prior to the Oct. 2018 update, but the restore process gets frozen every time and can never complete the restore entirely. Doubt it's malware because my antivirus keeps saying it's found nothing (unless McAfee is a liar). All my drivers are updated if I go to check for updates via the Device Manager. I see no other Windows updates pending.

I don't know if this is something I can fix or if this is something to be addressed in a future Windows update. Regardless, I'm really tired of losing work when the system crashes. What can be done?

    Hello EmThom,

1809 build is no longer available for updating and removed from downloading page for further investigation and fixes.

If you can use your device as normal just wait for a new fixed updated.

If issue makes your work not comfortable:

    1. You can use Go back option and return to the 1803
    2. You can reset OS and update, you will get 1803 in the end
    3. You can clean reinstall 1803, now only this build is available for installation

Notes: always do back-up of your important data

We are all waiting for more info about 1809 and fixes.

    Hi.

I would recommend you to check your SSD or Hard Disk HDD with chkdsk.

1.- First, close all the programs and files that you have open.

2.- Click with the right mouse button in the Windows Start menu and select Control Panel. Then choose the category System and security. On the next screen, look down Administrative Tools on the right and click on that option.

3.- One of those tools is the Windows Memory Diagnostic. Double click on it to open it.

4.- The diagnosis gives two options to choose from. See what each one does and click on the one you prefer:

Restart now and check if there are problems. It is best to select in most cases. Make sure to close all programs as I have asked before. The PC will reboot on its own when choosing this option. Right after, the check also starts automatically.

    Then check the Hard Disk.

    1. Open an elevated Command Prompt (Press the Windows + X button at the same time, then choose Command Prompt (Admin))
    2. Type the following command, and replace the X with the drive letter you wish to scan: “CHKDSK X:
    3. Hit the enter key, Command Prompt will now start CHKDSK.
