Hi Ironsmashweb, I'm Graeme, an independent adviser here to help.

There could be a number of reasons why this is occurring, but a faulty disk drive is a definite possibility.

Would you be able to let me know what brand and model your drive is? Is it a HDD or SSD?

You could start off by running a checkdisk to see if any bad sectors can be repaired.

    • In File Explorer, right click your drive and select Properties.
    • In the Tools tab, run the disk checking utility.

This may take a while, but it can repair any bad sectors on your drive and potentially fix the issue.

Let me know how you go! Thanks!

I have two possibilities, both of which happened to me:

    • I had a hard drive that was failing. The tip was that the performance graph showed that the disk utilization would jump to 100% and stay there for a second, then fall back.
    • Something about Chrome was causing 100% disk utilization. I don't remember how I tumbled to that, but when I uninstalled Chrome the problem went away instantly. This seems unlikely, but it's worth a shot.

    Hi, Ironsmashweb

My name is Phillip and I am an Independent Advisor. I hope it helps.

What I can recommend is that you completely repair the operating system, but first you must backup your files, although with this method the data is not lost but it is a good idea to backup as a security measure, third-party applications if they are uninstalled, check this link.
