Cannot access Windows 95 shared folder from Windows 10

Hi folks!

I am experiencing a weird problem with an old PC, controlling an instrument in the lab, which runs Windows 95.

I set up a shared folder to collect data from the instruments (without relying on floppy disks for that).

Curiously, my PC (running Windows 10) cannot access the shared folder (no credentials asked, I get error 0x80004005) BUT another PC also with Windows 10 can. I don't see the PC listed in the network but I can access it by looking for \PC-name and the shared folder shows up.

This brings me to think that the Win 95 share is setup correctly.

I was wondering why I can access it from one PC and not from another one in the same network.

Is there any specific Windows 10 setting that may prevent access to that shared folder?

    Dear Srimadhwa ,

the post you link is unfortunately not relevant to the issue, for two reasons.

First of all, another PC running Windows 10 have no problems whatsoever accessing the shared folder I set up. I would say then the sharing itself works fine.

More importantly, I'm not trying to share a folder ON Windows 10, but I want to access FROM a Windows 10 system a folder shared on a Windows 95 machine (i.e. by looking for \namehost on the network).

Something which I can easily do from the other Windows 10 machine and not from my PC.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply with updated information. Appreciate your efforts to work on this issue.

You might know that in Windows 10, some features of file sharing over a network have changed, including the removal of Home Group in the latest Windows 10 update.

Refer to this article to check if that helps with the file sharing in Windows 10.

    Hope this helps.

Let us know how it goes.

    Thanks Dave!

I can confirm that my Windows 10 is build 1803.

I tried what you wrote starting up all the services (#2 was the only one running already).

Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.

    Hi Lica,

Click your Start Button, type winver and hit Enter

On the resulting dialog, what version of Windows 10 are you running?

If you are running version 1803 of Windows 10 or later, please try this:

Click your Start Button, type Services and hit Enter

When the Services app opens, scroll down to find the following services, then double click each one in turn, set their startup type to Automatic and start the service if necessary

    1. Function Discovery Provider Host
    2. Function Discovery Resource Publication
    3. SSDP Discovery
    4. UPnP Device Host

Save that and close the Services app

    That's It!
