Hyper-V Integration Services, 2012 Hosts, 2012/2012R2/2016 VM's

Question

Hello all,

I have a question/doubt about Hyper-V Integration Services. I have a windows server 2012 cluster with hosts (windows server 2012) and vm's(windows server 2012, windows server 2012R2 and windows server 2016 ) to have the latest Integration Services.

We do have WSUS in place.

I have seen a lot of info saying that since windows technical preview it is possible to install Integration Services from WSUS, for that we would need KB3004908 to be installed on hosts and vm's. So is right tu assume that with it is possible to do it with on Windows Server 2012 hosts and on the VM's?

Can anyone tell me if it possible to update Integration Services with WSUS and how to do it? Thanks, Rui Garcia

Thanks for your posting on Q&A.

According to this link, the KB3004908 provides Hyper-V integration components to virtual machines that are running on a Windows Technical Preview-based or Windows Server Technical Preview-based Hyper-V host. This phenomenon is different from yours.

The host is Windows Server 2012 in your environment. According to this link, for hosts earlier than Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10, we will need to manually install or update the integration services in the guest operating systems. In my opinion, we could not update the integration services from the WSUS.

In addition, we could get the hotfixes for Windows Server 2012 hosts from the below link:

In addition, I noticed that the host installed on the Windows Server 2012 don't support the Windows Server 2016 guests. Please refer to the below link:

Thanks for you clarification, though i still have some questions:

1. To have better stability on the hyper-v cluster we should install the lastest hyper-v updates and the latest integration services on guest?
2. If hosts and guests are all on Windows Server 2016, this can be done "automatically" with windows update/wsus?

Here are understanding of your questions just for your reference:

In my opinion, there is no need to install all the hotfixes. A hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in the article. You should not apply the
hotfix if you have not seen the symptoms.

2. If hosts and guests are all on Windows Server 2016, this can be done "automatically" with windows update/wsus?
The most windows clients could keep integration services up to date from Windows Update. Here are screenshots for your reference:
