Windows 19 auto update caused problems

Pc suddenly one day wouldnt operate properly. All programs slow and alternately running and not responding. No evidence of virus or maleware etc. with defender and malwarebites. Hoping it was a auto update that would eventually get fixed, i cycled power every day for a week to no avail. Finally read about the windows restore feature. Restored to a week earlier and all seems good now.

Question: Will microsoft keep autoupdating causing the problem again? Or will it know i needed to restore and figure out their issue? Or do i somehow need to stop the updates?

Thanks for any info/advice

David

    Hi Greg,

Wow, thanks for your fast detailed response.

So far so good with the Restore. Good to know I now have options if updates go bad again!

    Sincerely,

    David

Hi David. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 9 year Windows MVP and Independent Advisor, here to help you.

Glad System Restore helped you out. System Restore is your first line of defense if Windows ever malfunctions as it can run even from recovery media to get you back before a problem started. It should always be turned on C drive with plenty of disk space (5-15%) configured.

Often when an Update causes problems it will not repeat those problems when it reinstalls. If it does you can uninstall it in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History, then immediately install Hide Updates tool to Check for Updates, catch and hide the Update: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

All other methods to manage Updates are here:

If you need a break you can turn the off by setting a Metered Connection, the only and most stable method: https://www.howtogeek.com/226722/how-when-and-w...

There are even good reports from users now who've had them shut off for awhile and only install the Version Upgrades twice a year from the Media Creation Tool which is the most stable method anyway, and includes all previous Updates rolled in. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
