Windows store and apps not working...

Yes, it's a problem with the Store, and yes, I've tried the troubleshooter (and a bunch of other "fixes" including doing a Windows reset, keeping my apps and data), and I still have the same issues.

  1. The Microsoft Store icon is missing and when I try to start it from the Search window, it does not start.
  2. All of the Store apps seem to be darkened in my Start Menu
  3. Microsoft Edge does not load ANY page.  Opera and Chrome continue to operate normally.
  4. The following error appears in the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational event log every time I try to start Microsoft Store :

"Activation for Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App failed. Error code: The application cannot be started. Try reinstalling the application to fix the problem.. Activation phase: Deployment"

Any ideas what migt be causing this?

Ok, I managed to sort out the Microsoft Store issue (the issue with Edge is still there, which I will have to investigate further).

The problem was caused by a badly-named file in the folder "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00_14.0.27323.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe".  Instead of the file being named "concrt140_app.dll", it was called "CONCRT~1.DLL".

The incorrectly-named file resisted all attempts I made to rename it, so eventually I took ownership of the folder it was in and renamed it to "Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00_14.0.27323.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe-old".

I then ran "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth", which created a new version of that folder in the same directory.  After that I rest the Microsoft Store app and it and the store apps are now functioning properly.

Now I just need to find out what's going on with Microsoft Edge....

    I might have found something...

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-AppxPackage |? Name -match "Microsoft.WindowsStore"

    IsPartiallyStaged : False

    SignatureKind     : Store

    Status            : DependencyIssue

The issue seems to be with the "Microsoft.VCLibs.140... " package.

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-AppxPackage |? Name -match "Microsoft.VCLibs.140"

    >>

    Name              : Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00

    IsResourcePackage : False

    IsBundle          : False

    IsDevelopmentMode : False

    NonRemovable      : False

    IsPartiallyStaged : False

    SignatureKind     : Store

    Status            : Modified, NeedsRemediation

All of the other dependencies are showing a status of "Ok".

So, I suspect resolving this issue will involve addressing that "modified, needs remediation" issue with "Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00".  What's the best way to do this?

    Hi,

Assuming this is a not a special edition of Windows 10 like Education or for business, tell us if the issue exists in the clean boot as well

PS The problem is something big so it might take some steps to reach to a solution.

I have already tried a repair install.  It has not fixed the problem.

    Hi Brian,

I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 2-Year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

Looks like a broken Windows as multiple Windows features seem to be having issues.

Try doing a repair install. A repair Install keeps everything including Files and applications and reinstalls Windows.

The best and the easiest way is to use first method in the first article.
