Thank you for your help and suggestions, Greg. They were similar to a response I had from Andre Da Costa on here that set out what I needed to do in explicit detail. I did as asked and the result was a repaired System Restore. The problem with being unable to copy files to my external drive appears to have been the result of a corrupt external drive as I tried to copy them again after carrying out the suggestions and was still unable to. I bought a new external drive and they copied immediately.

    Thanks again.

    Sloane -

Thank you for confirming that the forums software is buggy because it gave me a bad rating while trying to help that you didn't intend. This iwll help us get it fixed.

The original link you said isn't opening and the repost of it you just did above open for me to a tracking thread for this issue in Community. Please try another browser.

    Greg,

First of all, I didn't mark your post unhelpful or give you a bad rating. Read it again and you'll see I thanked you for your help and suggestions and I merely said that another post gave me simple walk-through instructions that I chose to use. I also explained on my second posting why I had needed to start a second thread.

The fix you asked me to look at on https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for... took me to a a page that said Page Not Found and I didn't know what I was supposed to do next.

The fix at https://ugetfix.com/ask/how-to-fix-the-semaphor...  was one I had already found myself but had ignored as I chose to use Andre's. I will now take a look at the further links you have given me for future reference.

Sloane, may I ask why you gave me a bad rating by clicking the unhelpful button before I had the chance to fully help you? I asked you not to.

Of course I wasn't able to see Andre's help in your other thread because you started a second thread to continue with the same issue which is against forums policy.

Did you try the fixes I gave for the error copying your files.

Unless an External drive fails diagnostics and a Disk Check then it probably doesn't need replacement because you can always move the data off and wipe it to reformat and it should fix the error:

    Testing tools: https://www.lifewire.com/free-hard-drive-testin...

    Disk Check: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/check-hard-dri...

    Reformat external: http://www.wikihow.com/Format-an-External-Hard-...

These are all of the fixes I would have walked you through had you worked with me instead of marking my post unhelpful when I asked you to wait until we had the chance to complete repairs.
