Okay, my printer works now. Here's exactly what I did:
I updated my BIOS, which was hilariously out-of-date. For the record, I don't think that's what fixed the problem.
Then:
- I did a Windows repair install, using the tool you mentioned in your previous post. I kept all apps and files.
- When it was done, I redownloaded and reinstalled the brother software and drivers package. This is same version I used before. It's the most current one for my printer.
- When I tried to print a test page, I got a different error. Windows popped up a notification in the bottom right-hand corner that there was an error and it couldn't print. I opened the print queue, and canceled the print job, but that didn't help.
The next steps I think were the key:
- I removed the Brother software via Apps & Features in Settings.
- I restarted the computer.
- I opened Print Management. Under Print Servers/[User]/Printers, I deleted the Brother MFC-7860DW. Under Print Servers/[User]/Drivers, I deleted the MFC-7860DW drivers. The drivers reappeared after a second or two, and I deleted them again. That seemed to do the trick.
- I removed the printer via Printers & Scanners in Settings.
- I restarted the computer.
- I reinstalled the Brother software. I made sure that the box for Status Monitor was ticked.
And then my printer worked again. I can print test pages and from Word. My scanner even works.
Thanks for the help, Greg. I couldn't have done it without you.
