Metered Connection

A while back I was having troubles downloading all the Windows 10 updates. Call tech support and bottom line they set my computer to a metered connection. That solved my problems. It worked.

Me internet provider only supplies me with 10 mbps of download speed.

Yesterday I turned off my metered connection and my 10 mbps went to all most zero. When I turned my metered connection back on everything went back to normal.

My computer worked fine without the metered connection being turned on when new.

Can't figure out why the metered connection being turned on or off  effects my speed now.

0 mbps when turned off and 9.6 mbps when turned on.

    Thank you for the update.

In that case if you run a speed test with metered connection off what result do you now get? If you're not doing so already I would recommend to use an online speed tester such as https://fast.com

Tried what you suggested. Bandwidth never changed.

Hi Fred! I'm Steve, an Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you. I'm happy to help with your query.

That doesn't sound ideal! One of the features of turning on metered connection is that some applications behave differently to reduce background data transfers. It's likely that an app on your computer is using a large amount of your 10 Mbps bandwidth in the background with metered connection off, then when you turn it on the app is reducing its background data usage which is freeing up your bandwidth.

In order to track down the cause of the issue I would recommend to open Task Manager and on the Processes tab sort by network usage. Then try turning the metered connection off and see which processes/apps start using more bandwidth.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance!
